This project has been such a privilege to work on. This community may only have a population of 900 but what they lack in size they more than make up with the vision, energy and an amazingly strong community spirit.
The village had no fuel for almost ten years which meant that villagers had a round trip of almost an hour just to get fuel and this was also a real negative for visitors to Newcastelton. So, this strong community decided that they would bring fuel back to the village applying for various grants including the Big Lottery Fund. And, on the 29th March fuel finally returned to Newcastleton and in this year of the Young People, the new station was opened by the children from the local primary school.
Bright Light Marketing have been working with Newcastleton to promote the opening of the petrol station encouraging locals not just in the village but also in the surrounding vicinity to support the new fuel station, for every litre of fuel that is sold, 1 penny comes back to the community for local initiatives and also getting the story out further afield in the local and national media.
The opening on the 29th March was a wonderful community occasion. Supported by both the local and national media including Border Life, BBC, ITV Borders, Scottish Field and the Scotsman.
As the Retail Manager of Gulf remarked:
“This might be the smallest fuel station that we have ever opened but it is certainly the biggest crowd at an opening we have ever seen.”
This totally sums up the spirit of Newcastleton, they may be small, but they have a strong community spirit that makes them very rich indeed.
