Why social media is no longer optional for business. Do you remember the time when social media was only used by kids? Then very rapidly this ‘fad’ started to be used by just about everyone to communicate socially with their friends and family. It’s hard to believe that the now ubiquitous Facebook was only launched in 2004, the first ever Tweet was sent in 2006 and it wasn’t until 2007 that Apple launched its first IPhone! But even until quite recently, it was still widely felt that social media was something that business couldn’t really benefit from. How wrong this has proved to be. There are over now more than 3 billion internet users and over 2 billion of them have active social media accounts. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have become absolute marketing giants, offering businesses unprecedented levels of information about their customers and the ability to reach them in a largely free way. How many #Hashtags are best?

Do you ever see a post on Twitter that is full of #Hashtags making it hard to read? Have you been told to use as many #Hashtags as possible as it will boost your post on Instagram? This is something we often see and hear.  It is naturally important to make sure your messages are communicated out as clearly as possible and reaching as many people as the message should however like anything there is a balance. A recent study by an American firm TrackMaven suggested the following: Twitter – the optimum being one #hashtag Instagram – Nine #Hashtags is the suggested amount per post Facebook – Whilst it is debatable if #Hashtags should be used at all on Facebook, the study suggest one #Hashtag. It was arguably a tough year for Twitter as it gets compared often unfairly with Facebook. They now have a new CEO and it will be interesting to see their plans for 2016. Facebook has made many changes over the course of 2015 and greatly improved their advertising platforms. Can we expect more of the same in 2016? And what of the other platforms? Recently Bright Light Marketing convinced us that we should try social media advertising as well as our other marketing activity. We decided reluctantly to try this out on Facebook. They showed us how this can be targeted to the specific group and geographical area you want to reach and also – the cost is very competitive.

We have now tried two campaigns. Not only did our sales increase for the products advertised, but we can also directly measure actions taken by advert readers, such as increased number of likes, direct bookings through Facebook, direct messages and further enquiries through Facebook.
